    BIRKENHEAD MATERNITY HOSPITAL. ANNUAL REPORT, 1940. The Hospital services have been maintained, as far as possible at the usual level, during this, the first complete year under war conditions ; statistically however, 1940 is not strictly comparable to a normal year. i The greatest difficulty has been that of staffing the Hospital; the absorption of trained midwives into the Military and Civil Defence Services has drained the usual supplies, and, unless measures are taken to avert it, this may well develop into an insuperable difficulty, grave in its consequences to maternal welfare. STATISTICS. IN-PATIENTS.—The admissions numbered 471, as against 516 the previous year ; this total included 261 first cases, 29 ante-natal cases and 8 single girls. The average daily number was 16.92 and the average length of stay 13.4 days. SICK BABIES' WARD.—15 Babies were admitted; the average daily number being 1 and the average length of stay 23.3 days. The Committee offer their grateful thanks to Mrs. Don. Nicholas and Miss Hancox for their gift of £5 each towards the maintenance of the “ Jean Watson ” Cot. OUT-PATIENTS.—Ante and Post Natal Clinics.—103 Sessions were held, at which the total number of attendances was 2,929 : of these 2,780 were ante natal and 149 post natal visits. First visits numbered 518. Infant Welfare.—The total attendances at the 52 Clinics held was 1,270, of which 204 were first visits. The kind services of the following helpers at these clinics are gratefully acknowledged :— Ante and Post Natal:—Miss Yates, Miss Rawlins and Miss Tickle. Baby Clinics :—-The Misses Blood, Miss Beazley, Mrs. Owen and Mrs. Cradock.
