Biographical note
Pierre Chirac was the most celebrated physician of his day; he obtained his M.D. at Montpellier in 1683, and by 1687 was professor of medicine. He was elected a Member of the Académie des Sciences in 1716, became head of the Jardin du Roi in 1718, and physician to Louis XV in 1731.
