Description

Three photographs taken on 6 February 1937 of a healing ceremony being undertaken by an Emberán traditional healer on a boy. The Emberá are an indigenous people of Panama and Columbia, previously known as the Choco or Katio Indians. The three photographs show the traditional healer wearing full regalia, the healer carrying the boy to the shelter accompanied by a flute player and the flute player bending over the cured boy following the healing ceremony. The photographs were acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1937 (accession numbers PHO 9928, PHO 9929 and PHO 9930). Related images: M0005709, M0005709EB, M0005711
