Description

Individual case files for patients (35 male and 47 female) transferred to Crichton Royal Hospital from Edinburgh District Asylum, Bangour between 1939 and 1941. Case files contain patient admission details, including original admission date to Bangour, in some cases details of patient's physical and mental condition, followed by dated case note entries concerning treatment and progress. Additional material is attached in some cases, including clinical records such as details of Cerletti's treatment (ECT) forms, laboratory test results, X-ray reports, administrative papers and correspondence.

Biographical note

During the Second World War a large number of patients were transferred to Crichton Royal Hospital when they were evacuated from Edinburgh District Asylum at Bangour. The first 150 patients arrived on 30 August 1939, leading to pressures on both hospital staff and accommodation. On 18 November 1941 a further 66 patients arrived.
