Hypertension Trial: Ethical Committee

A Medical Research Council funded trial of mild hypertension. Design: to give a 95% chance of detecting a 40% reduction in deaths due to hypertension and stroke and non-fatal strokes. Duration: 5 years. Participants: 18,000, 35-64 years at entry, both sexes. Trial type: single blind. Doll acted as Chair of the Ethical Committee, which initially comprised: Dr John Fry, Dr M Hamilton, Dr Austin Heady and Dr Peter Taylor. The Committee was reconstituted in November 1980 (with unaltered terms of reference) as Doll (Chair), Dr Fry, Professor R Hoffenberg, Professor J M Ledingham, and Dr Taylor - see Historical Note (5 December, 1980), B/4/1.
