Mr Macalpine Leny gives his opinion about the issue surrounding the post of Matron, and expresses his belief that Miss Thomson should have succeeded Miss Softley, 'I cannot see how the Trustees can go back on the question of religion.'

Biographical note

James Macalpine Leny was a Director of Crichton Royal Institution between 1840 and 1856 and was also a Testamentary Trustee from 1856 to 1866. Mr Thomas Steuart Gladstone of Capenoch served a Director of Crichton Royal Institution five times between 1854 and 1872.
