    PINCHERS FOR THE EXAMINATIONS OF THE FORNIX CONJUNCTIVAE SUPERIOR All the physicians know how to turn up the upper eye-lid, in order to examine the conjunctiva of the tarsus; — but the examination of the fornix conjunctivae superioris recpiires another fold, which is difficult or rather quite impossible to make witli only one hand. However the examination of this fornix is very important, because there are often found stronge objects in it and because the diseases, which befall the conjunctiva of the tarsus, very seldom spare the conjunctiva of the fornix. The perfect antisepsisthat indispensable preliminary of surgical operations and the treatment of several ocular diseases require the application of disinfectant solutions. To apply them properly, the whole ocular conjunctiva must be visible. I have ottained much prompter cures with solutions of corrosive sublimate (deutochloride of mercury) applied directly on the upper fornix and adopting the pinchers, whose description now follows. This small instrument has the size and dimensions of a pair of de- pilatory pinchers, but its two b;'ancli9s wear two rings in the shape of stirrups, analogous notwithstanding the opposite direction with the ring of tlie windowed branch of Desmarres' pinchers. You may straiten or screw Uie branches and rings by means of a male and a female screw (Fig. 1). Any other system of fastening would be less pratical; as the pressiire mCist be sufficient and there 1)0 a contrivance to suit it to the thickness of the eye-lid. — The use of the pinchers is quite simple.
