About this work

Description

The Commission was appointed in July 1927 to inquire into all aspects of the administration an development of the national collections. Written and oral evidence was received from representatives of the national collections and interested organisations and individuals. HSW's evidence concerned the desirability of establishing an Imperial Ethnographic Museum, drawing upon the British Museum collections, to be situated in central London. HSW's written and oral evidence to the Commission is the only clear statement of the purpose and nature of his own museum and anthropologic collections, and as such are highly significant documents.
