St Mark's Hospital, London was founded by Frederick Salmon in 1835 to treat patients with anorectal disorders. It was one of the first specialist hospitals and has played a major part in the development of gastroenterology, nutrition research and the understanding of colorectal disease. Avery Jones was Honorary Consulting Gastroenterologist at St Mark's Hospital from 1949 until 1977.
