This was a long-term project to explore and extend the role of the pharmacist in general health care and family planning. It was started in 1980 by the FPA and the PSGB and was soon extended to be part of the work of the FPIS. The project aimed to develop information materials for use within the pharmacy; leaflets for customers and background reading, such as a 'Contraceptive Handbook' that was developed for the pharmacist. The project was launched nationally in February 1986 and called 'Health care in the High Street'. It was administered by the PSGB under the guidance and supervision of a Steering Committee on which the HEC, SHEG, FPA, NPA and PSGB were all represented. The project provided health care literature stands to contain free leaflets for 12,000 pharmacies in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The stands were used to distribute a wide range of different leaflets; as well as leaflets on family planning, there were also leaflets on drug abuse and smoking amongst others, the leaflet stocks were changed each month. An evaluation of the scheme was carried out by Aston University.
