    FOREWORD. This report is again, submitted in a shortened form in accordance with the advice received from the Ministry of Health. One of the reasons for the delay in its appearance was the unfortunate illness of Dr. T. W. Stallybrass who was off duty from early in 1946 until the end of the year, when his resignation took effect. It is fitting to place on record that Dr. Stallybrass served the County for twenty years, during thirteen of which he was County Medical Officer. He spared no pains to increase the efficiency of the health services in Dorset, and in particular his efforts to improve the tuberculosis service and to establish the County Clinics and Laboratory in Dorchester met with the success they deserved. Although the war ended in 1945, in so far as the work of the medical department was concerned the year belonged to the period of emergency. The main efforts of the remaining experienced members of the department were directed towards keeping the existing services in operation, and difficulties frequently arose as a result of the ever increasing volume of work and the steadily decreasing numbers of doctors, dentists, nurses, and clerks. That the work of the department was successful can be seen from the statistical details attached to this report, and credit is due both to the professional and clerical staff for carrying out their duties so energetically during a difficult period.
