Smith, the retiring President, then delivered the following opening address:— Gentlemen,—In meeting here to open this new session of the Eoyal Physical Society, the first thing that strikes us all is, that our weU-known and highly-valued Secretary, Dr Eobert Brown, is not present this evening to welcome us, and, as usual, conduct the preliminary part of our business. I am glad to say that it is not from ill health or any such ■ evil cause that we have not his well-known presence with us, but that he has thought proper to migrate to the great metro- ; polls, where he thinks and feels he will have more scope for I his talents and acquirements. 1 am sure we wish him all * success in his new sphere of life, and in the literary labours VOL.
