    XLVII.—Pilocarpine and the Alkaloids of Jahorandi Leaves. By Hooper Albert Dickinson Jowett, D.Sc. Pilocarpine, the principal alkaloid contained in jaborandi leaves, was discovered by Hardy (Bull. Soc. Chem., 1875, [ii], 24, 497) and by Gerrard (Phcvrm. «/., 1875, [ iii ], 5, 865, 965 ; 7, 225) independently in 1875, and crystalline salts were prepared by the latter chemist, but no detailed description of the salts was given nor were they analysed. In 1876, Kingzett (this Journ., 1876, ii, 30,367) published an analysis of a platinichloride which had not been purified, and proposed the formula C23H3504N4; his results, however, agree within the limits of experimental error with the simpler formula, CnH1602N2.
