Biographical note

In 1954, the Population Investigation Committee gave Mr H. Brookfield a grant of £175 to enable him to visit Mauritius and make a study of the development of population there. The results were published in Population Studies in Nov 1957. Following this, in 1967, the PIC received an inivitation from the Government of Mauritius to advise on the evaluation of family planning activities. The project was financed by a grant from the Nuffield Foundation. Mr Christos Xenos, formerly a Research Officer of the PIC, was appointed to direct the project and supervised by Mr William Brass. The project also received assistance from the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

In 1970 Mr Xenos completed the first major report. The Government of Mauritius wished to continue and expand the evaluation programme, and it was decided that Mr Xenos should continue his work. Additional funds to implement this came from the Overseas Development Administration. As a result Mr Xenos became actively involved in planning for the long-term evaluation of the programme and assisted in planning sections of the next Census which would throw light on the recent decline in fertility in Mauritius. In 1975 the Government of Mauritius agreed to publish the report of Mr Xenos on the Mauritius Family Planning Programme as a government publication.
