MILITARY MEDICINE AND MINISTRY OF PENSIONS

TL was Director of the Military Heart Hospitals at Hampstead and Colchester, 1916-1919, where he investigated `soldiers heart', or `deranged action of the heart' (DAH) on behalf of the MRC. His work led to a greater understanding of the condition, which he renamed the `effort syndrome', and to its treatment by a system of graduated exercises and a much improved method for assuring cardio-vascular fitness. He became Consulting Physician to the Eastern Command in 1918 and was involved in the training of US Medical Officers at Colchester and Hampstead.

In 1919 he was appointed as Consulting Physician to the Ministry of Pensions, instituting a follow-up scheme for pensioners with cardiac conditions, treating and studying many of them at UCH.

TL's World War II papers relate to his work as First Aid Commandant, Chorleywood, including complaints about the design of tourniquets, and membership of the MRC's Committees for the Care of Shipwrecked Personnel and for Vascular Injuries.
