Biographical note
Abel, Clarke (c.1780-1826) was a naturalist and surgeon. He made his reputation with his Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China, 1816-1817 , which contains descriptions of the orang-utan and the boa. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1819. He died in India on 24 November 1826. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
