Black and white photograph of a model of an Aesculapius, or Coluber longissimus, snake coiled around a wooden staff. The model represents the Rod of Asclepius, which, in Greek mythology, was wielded by the Greek god Asclepius (Asklepios), a deity associated with healing and medicine. The symbol has continued to be used in modern times, where it is associated with medicine and health care. This item is not held by Wellcome Collection.
