Biographical note

This meeting was to launch the next phase of the ICM/FIGO Joint Study Group (JSG), involving several projects for which funding had been obtained. The US Department of Health, Education and Welfare (H.E.W) provided funding for the meeting; a part of these funds were to be also allocated to updating Maternity Care in the World; and finally the extensive project planned involving the appraisal of the training and practice of midwives in LDCs and the promotion of their role in Family Planning, funded by USAID grant in May 1972 (the ICM/USAID Project). The aim of the JSG was "to continue the improvement of maternal and child care, and the quality of maternal and child life through the inclusion of Family Planning among the services provided by midwives of all categories in their expanding role".

The meeting was chaired by Sir John Peel, Chairman of the JSG, who introduced new Committee members including co-opted members representing WHO, H.E.W, USAID, IPPF; and new midwife members from Italy and Nigeria. Miss Lucille Woodville, President of the ICM, attended for first time in her official capacity as Vice-President of the Committee; and Miss Marjorie Bayes, ICM Executive Secretary, as Secretary of the JSG. Miss Bayes noted in the JSG Secretary's Report that "the work of the JSG..now constitutes about two-thirds of the work of the ICM.."
