Reproduction of a photograph originally published in Seligman, C. G: The Melanesians of British New Guinea, Cambridge: University Press, 1910 and reproduced in Hutchinson, Walter: Customs of the world : a popular account of the manners, rites and ceremonies of men and women in all countries, volume I, London: Hutchinson, 1913. The publication identifies the item as a "skull prepared for sorcery". A photograph of the book plate was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1938 (accession number PHO 10952)
