    Swanaoe Cottaoe Ibospftal REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1939. / / \S in former years I must begin my report by stressing the [/—[ invaluable help the Hospital receives from our Medical Staff, the Honorary Consultants, and in particular Dr. Campbell Shaw and Mr. Roy Salkeld whose work in connection with Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat cases is of inestimable benefit to patients who are spared the long wait which is almost inevitable at the Bournemouth and District Hospitals. But I need hardly point out the attention and .skill shown by the Medical Staff would be of little avail were it not for the devoted work of the Matron and the Nursing Staff. To them, as well as to the doctors, we owe a deep debt of gratitude. Cases treated during 1939. In-patients, 210 ; Out¬ patients’ attendances, 1370. Major Operations, 40 ; Eyes, Mr. Campbell Shaw, 141 ; Eyes, Dorset County Council, 80 ; Ears, Nose and Throat, including 20 operations, 230 ; Accidents, 134 ; Medical Cases, 50 ; Dental Cases, 25 ; Minor Opera¬ tions, 100 ; Daily Dressings and Treatment, 784. The Patients came from the following districts :—Swanage, 1,168 ; Corfe Castle, 112 ; Eangton, 80 ; Kingston, 6 ; Worth, 34; Studland, 21 ; Other places, 159. Total, 1,580. Hospital Aid Association, it is with pleasure that we are able to report that during the past year there has been a stead}7 increase of new members joining, although the increase is naturally not as great as it was about 5 years ago. Every year, however, has shown an advance. Ten years ago the membership was under 200 ; to-day it is just over 850, and but for the outbreak of war we should probably have been 011 the way towards the 1,000 mark by the end of 1940. The applications by members for treatment or consulting the Specialists attending the Hospital has naturally increased, but the amounts paid have likewise increased each year. The Committee take this opportunity of again thanking the Collectors for their valuable services during the past year, especially the Firms and Pirn pi overs who support the Association by insuring their Employees.
