Biographical note
The author, one of the most eminent pathologists of Italy in the 19th century obtained his M.D. at Bologna, and was later professor of clinical medicine at Florence in 1835. He was elected a Senator in 1860. An opponent of the theories of Brown and Rasori, he rejected the use of excessive blood-letting and was in favour of the use of opium.
