Voluntary Sterilisation material

Correspondence, papers, presscuttings etc relating to Mrs Hussey's activism around voluntary sterilisation in 1930s. In particular it contains material relating to her campaign, along with Mrs Cora Hodson, to engender support for sterilisation among religious bodies.

This material was stored for an unknown period in unsatisfactory conditions and there was a significant amount of damage. Some items were so badly deteriorated that they have been disposed of: however, in these cases there are existing duplicates in the archives of the Eugenics Society.

In Wellcome: There is a significant amount in the archive of the Eugenics Society (SA/EUG) relating to attempts to obtain government legislation permitting sterilisation on a voluntary basis, including records of the Committee for Legalising Sterilisation and the Joint Committe on Voluntary Sterilisation, as well as a file for Mrs Hussey. There is also related material in the archives of the Family Planning Association (SA/FPA) and the papers of C P Blacker (PP/CPB).

This material was discovered in the cellar of Court Lodge House in Lamberhurst, the same village where Rosamond Hussey lived in Scotney Castle. How it got there is not known.
