Biographical note

J.T.C. Ross (1823-1997) spent most of his career as an army surgeon and medical officer in India.

He joined the medical establishment of the Bengal Army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1845. He served in the First Sikh or Sutlej war, 1845-46; Second Sikh or Punjab war, 1848-49; first Muranzi Expedition, 1851; against the tribes in the Ranazai Valley, 1852; in the affair on the Kohat-Kohtul in 1853; during the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58. Ross was Principal Medical Officer with the Duffla Expedition on the North East Frontier, 1874-75 [see MS. 7859]. He was promoted Surgeon in 1859, Surgeon Major in 1865 and Deputy Inspector General in 1872.

He retired in 1879 having also served on the Committee for the relief of Turkish soldiers in the Russo-Turkish War, 1876-77, and in the Zulu War. During his career Ross was awarded a number of medals and clasps and was commended for his bravery, skill and compassion. He was editor of the Indian Medical Gazette 1869-70.
