PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE. REPORT FOR 1954. Hospital Charges. The Committee is again pleased to report that the system of charging for in-patient treatment at the General Hospital continues to work smoothly and, during the year 1954, the average amount received per patient was 10/- per day. The Committee takes this opportunity of empha¬ sizing once again that no person is denied the services of the hospital and that the charge made (if any) is based on the patient’s ability to pay. It is therefore not proposed to make any alteration in the present rate or system of assessment for the time being. Report of Medical Officer of Health. The Medical Officer of Health makes the following points in regard to the health of the population for 1954. No epidemics occurred during the year. The birth rate was 14.6 per 1,000 as against 13.4 for 1953, whilst the death rate was 12.8 per 1,000 as against 12.5 for 1953.
