Biographical note
Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), was the third son of Queen Victoria and a military man.
The British Home and Hospital for Incurables was founded in 1861 in Clapham, South London; it later moved to larger premises in Crown Lane, Streatham Common (which was at that time semi-rural). The new Home was inaugurated in 1894 and in 1899 the organisation was incorporated by Royal Charter. It exists to provide residential care for the chronically sick and seriously disabled; initially for the middle classes but subsequently taking in people from all social backgrounds.
