    You are respecifutty requested to give a few minutes to the careful perusal of the subjoined Statement, bearing upon a subject which, in many quarters, is very little understood. THE PUEPOSE AND PEOVISIONS OF AND REASONS FOE THEIR TOTAL REPEAL. Published for the Edinburgh Repeal Committee. c — As many persons have only a vague idea of the nature of these Acts, and of the objections so strongly felt to them; and as a wish has been expressed by some in this position' for a statement containing the requisite information, the Edinburgh Committee for the Total Repeal of these Acts have prepared the following Statement: I—The Purpose of these Acts. It is a most noticeable thing that this cannot be gathered bom the Acts themselves. They are without any preamble Hence their purpose must be gathered from the Evidence led before the Parliamentaiy Committees, and from the Argu- ments founded on it. From these, the purpose is abundantly clear, and the reason why it is not stated is equally obvious lhat Furpose then, is not to check immorality; nor even to stamp out those diseases which are its natural results and the checks upon its indulgence. It is, by the speedy detec- tion of such diseases in the persons of females only who are of immoral ife, and by the cure of these females, from time to time, to check the dissemination of those diseases to their male associates.
