Journal while surgeon on board HMS Satellite on a voyage by steam and sail to Vancouver Island (subsequently part of British Columbia, Canada)

Voyage via the Falkland Islands and the Pacific coasts of Chile and Peru, December 1856-June 1857, and while stationed at Vancouver Island, June 1857-March 1859. Included are an account of Piers' treatment of the wounded at Callao, Peru, during the insurrection by General Manuel de Vivanco, with remarks on the use of anaesthetics (April 1857, pp. 33-40), and criticism of ship ventilation and provision for the sick and wounded on board (pp. 42-46). Piers was based at Vancouver Island during the Governorship of Sir James Douglas (1803-1877), when British Columbia was declared a British Colony.
