About this work
Description
Four sermons (two incomplete) by unnamed members of the Jenner Family. The earliest sermon is incomplete, and is dated on the first leaf 'at ye colledge June 27th [16]80'. It is possible that this was written by Robert Jenner, who matriculated at Magdalen Hall in 1651 and graduated M.A. in 1658. He was Rector of Churchlench 1663-1670, and of Lydiard Millicent 1665-1724. The second sermon is perhaps by Thomas Jenner [1687-1768], or partly written for him. On the verso of the first leaf it is stated to have been 'Preach'd at L. Coxwell April 30th 1721' and at other places afterwards, the latest being at 'Shillingford Aug. 29 1742' (all villages S.E. of Faringdon, Oxon.). On the last leaf 'Eastington ad P.M. Nov. 24th 1782', probably by the hand of William Davies, Rector of Eastington [1741-1817]. The third sermon, which is written on the rectos only and incomplete at the beginning and end, is by a different hand from either of the first two. By the script it seems to have been written c. 1720. The fourth sermon, also written on the rectos only, is said to be 'Written by the Rev. Stephen Jenner, Vicar of Berkeley ... 1702-1754'. It is however dated on the last leaf 1718-1724, and in places on the versos are additions in a script resembling that of the third sermon mentioned above. It is written by the hand of a young man, who may have been the Stephen Jenner mentioned in the quoted remark, which is inserted in pencil on the first leaf by a 19th cent. owner.
