    Treating Sewage, (This Invention received Provisional Protection only.) PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by Joseph Judge Hays at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 28th October 1870. I Joseph Judge Hays, of Hertingfordbury, in the County of Hert- 5 ford, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for “Impeove- MENTS IN Teeating AND Deodoeizing Sewage,” to be as follows : My Invention consists in improvements in treating sewage or other refuse, as nightsoU, or any deleterious matter with peat charcoal, an allowing it to repose for a time, after which it is filtered by any of the 10 usual and known methods, the water passing off is again passed through a bed of peat charcoal, and afterwards through a filter or steatum o carbonate or hydrate of lime and sand, while the solid sewap is treated with any mineral acid to prevent the evolution of ammonia, and may then be mixed with phosphate of lime or or any other valuable fertihzing 16 agents.
