About this work

Description

Field work was carried out by Eric Miller between October 1947 to July 1949 into the Indian Caste system, focusing on the northern part of the Malabar Coast (Malabar District and Cochin State). The project began two and a half months after India gained independence from colonial rule, and Miller spent time in a small town, Petrintalmanna, South Malabar, before studying two hamlets (Pattanur, North Malabar; Puthurkara, Cochin State). Additionally, brief visits were made to other towns in North Kerala.

This work was funded by a Goldsmiths’ Company Dominions (Travelling) Scholarship and a grant from the Worts Fund, University of Cambridge. Miller published his findings "Caste and Territory in Malabar", American Anthropologist 56: 410–420 (1954).
