Description
Volumes comprise lists of patients arranged alphabetically by the local authority (County or Burgh) chargeable for their board. Information contained includes patient name, number, date of admission, discharge and death. Any changes are also recorded, e.g. if the responsibility for payment of board is changed from one local authority to another. Information relates to patients from the local area (Interns) and those from outside the region (Externs). The name of the Chief Public Assistance Officer for each local authority is also recorded. Dates of discharge and death and not recorded for every patient. Names of patients included are those resident when volumes were created, as a result volumes contain names of patients admitted as early as 1878.
Volumes are indexed by name of local authority.

Pauper or rate-aided patients were those who could not afford to pay for their board and were maintained by their local parish or, after 1929, their local authority.
