Burkitt's correspondence with Peter Cleave 1968-1975

File of correspondence originally labelled [by Burkitt] 'Some samples of my voluminous correspondence with Peter Cleave 1968-75'.

This covers their discussions of the sources of disease, understanding its spread and patterns distribution, and notably the role of the Western diet (refined foods, high sugar foods), diet related diseases and the role of fibre and dietary fibre. It also covers the variations in the hypotheses of Burkitt/Trowell (as expressed in their book Refined Carbohydrate Foods and Disease: Some Implications of Dietary Fibre, 1975) and Cleave which developed into somewhat of a bitter controversy. The majority of letters are from Surgeon Captain Peter Cleave in manuscript format. Burkitt and Trowell put less emphasis on white flour and sugar as a cause of disease and more on the lack of dietary fibre. Cleave put more emphasis on the refinement of sugar as a cause of disease.

The correspondence is arranged in chronological order although a few letters are undated.
