About this work

Description

File consists of papers and correspondence related to the seminar on "Technology Transfer in Britain: The Case of Monoclonal Antibodies", which was held at the Wellcome Institute on 24 September 1993. The seminar was part of the Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine meetings also known as the Witness Seminars. This seminar was different from later seminars in that the accounts of the seminar were first published in Contemporary Record before appearing in book form as part of the Witness Seminar series. The transcript of this seminar was published with three other seminars in Volume 1 of the Witness Seminar series, E.M. Tansey, P.P. Catterall, D.A. Christie, S.V. Willhoft, L.A. Reynolds (editors), Technology Transfer in Britain: The Case of Monoclonal Antibodies; Self and Non-self: A History of Autoimmunity; Endogenous Opiates; The Committee on Safety of Drugs, (London: Wellcome Trust, 1997).

Details of the seminar correspondence, primarily between Dr Tilli Tansey, Historian of Twentieth Century Medical Science (meeting organiser and joint editor of the seminar transcript), and others include:

Correspondence with Peter Catterall (joint editor of the seminar transcript), February 1992 to June 1996. This includes notes concerning the setting up of the Witness Seminars which had been previously organised by the Institute of Contemporary British History.

Prepared papers, notes and transcripts include; the script used by Dr Basil Bard; a transcript of the speech of Dr John Galloway; edited transcript of the comments of Professor Georges Kohler; and notes made by Dr Nicholas Russell (Nuffield Science in Practice).

Correspondence with seminar attendees, requests for information and comments on the published document both from attendees and non-attendees including; Professor Leslie Brent (Emeritus Professor of Immunology, St Mary's Hospital, London); Professor Peter Campbell (Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, U.C.L.); Dr Giles Courtice (Scientific Generics Limited); Professor Cambrosio (McGill University, Department of Social Studies of Medicine, Montreal, Canada); A.R. Helm (Medical Research Council); Professor Horace Judson; and Sir Aaron Klug (Director Medical Research Council).

Correspondene with Frank Cass publishers regarding permission to reproduce the article, based on the Monoclonal Antibodies Witness seminar, that appeared in Contemporary British History, formerly known as Contemporary Record. The article was E.M. Tansey & P. Catterall (editors), "Technology Transfer in Britain: the Case of Monoclonal Antibodies", Contemporary Record, vol.9 no.2, pp409-444, Autumn 1995. A copy of the article, a paper called "The Question of Patenting", unsigned notes of the seminar and John Galloway's transcript of a cassette tape from the seminar are included in the correspondence.
