    Date of Application, 20th Mar., 1897 Complete Specification Left, 20th Dec., 1897—Accepted, 5th Feb., 1898 PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION. A New or Improved Method of Producing, and Apparatus for the Administration of, Anaesthetics, or other Volatile Vapours. I, Frederick Thomas George Hobday, of the Royal Veterinary College, College Street, Camden Town, in the County of Middlesex, M.R.C.V.S., Veterinary Surgeon, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows: — In the specification of my patent dated the 10th October 1895, No. 19018, I have 5 described an apparatus for the production and administration of antestlietic or other volatile vapours, whereby air is drawn into the bottle by suction, it entering through an open ended tube passing therefrom by a non return valve, over the surface of the liquid, and through the suction pipe by means of a flexible pump to the mask, and a comparatively lightly impregnated vapour is thereby 10 administered. Before my aforesaid invention it was common to force the air through the liquid, whereby very heavily impregnated vapour was administered; now the object of this present invention is to administer air or gas impregnated with the volatile vapour in a medium degree only. With the above object in view I provide a tube passing through the stopper of the bottle containing the (say anaesthetic) 15 fluid the outside end of the pipe being in connection with the tube through which the air is forced and the air thereby caused to impinge directly upon the surface of the liquid in the bottle, but the tube end must not extend to the surface of the liquid itself. The air thus forced into the bottle and becoming impregnated in a medium 20 degree with the volatile vapour, passes off by a second open ended tube, carried by the stopper above the level of the liquid, and this second tube is in connection with a flexible tube leading to the mask. This flexible tube is provided with a tap for regulating the supply of impregnated air. Such an apparatus as that before described may be supplied with air or gas from 25 a pressure reservoir containing compressed air or gas. Hated this 20th day of March 1897.
