The reformers of York Lunatic Asylum were active in the 1815 House of Commons Select Committee inquiring into abuses at Asylums. But the Tukes were also active on other aspects of proposed asylum reform; they were, for example, concerned that some clauses of the 1814 Bill to reform Madhouses would adversely affect charitable establishments like the Retreat. As well as correspondence, the following are also included in this file: Bill to Repeal an Act made in the 14th Year of His Present Majesty and another Act made in the 55th Year of His Present Majesty, for regulating Madhouses; and for making other Provisions and Regulations thereof, 13 February 1817 Bill to provide proper places for the Confinement and Care of Lunatics in Scotland, 8 July 1817, with a Summary showing according to the returns from the parochial clergy in Scotland the number of Lunatics in each presbytery Notes on the clauses of the Bill Printed petition of the Retreat to the House of Commons relating to clauses in the Bill Observations on several clauses of the Bill...by Samuel Tuke
