To the Chairman and Members of the Health Committee. Gentlemen, I have the honour to lay before you the following Report of the Sanitary condition of your District for the year 1905. I beg to remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, SIDNEY PRITCHETT. POPULATION. The population of the District at the middle of 1905, calculated according to the method cf the Registrar General, that is to sav, logarithmically, was 32,637, made up as follows :— Medway locality, 18,520; Strood locality, 14,117 In other wTords, between the Census of 1901 and the middle of 1905, 4^ years have elapsed, and in that time the population of the whole District has increased by 2,047, that °f Lie Medway locality by 922, and that of the Strood locality by 1,125. BIRTHS. births have been registered, made up as follows Male Female. Total, Medway 216 230 446 Strood 201 195 396 4U 425 Cl 4* co This gives a birth rate of 257 for the whole District, which is the lowest for many years, and, as far as I know the lowest on record. It is 17 below the average of the past ten years. The birth rate for the Medway locality is about 24, and that for Strood about 28. The natural increase of the population, by excess of births over deaths, amounted to 403. 'fn 1904 it was 381, which is about its normal figure. DEATHS. The number of nett deaths in the year, that is of residents dying either within or without the District is 359, made up as follows : Medway ... ... 202 Strood ... ... 157 359 Pixcept in IQ03 this is the lowest number on record, and is 101 below the average for the past ten years. Vital statistics of the whole District and of its component localities, and in which these preliminary fioures are elaborated, will be found set forth in the Tables appended to this Report. The Death Rate for the year was 107 per thousand. The Birth Rate was 25-7 per thousand. The Zymotic Death Rate was 1.13 per thousand. The Infant Mortality, per 1,000 births registered, was 110-4.
