    PREF; In venturing to put forward a new theory of heredity, my excuse is that I cannot find that any of the authorised theories are founded upon evidential truth, and also that their framers studiously keep out of consideration the most im portant factor in heredity, namely, the life-process itself which forms and operates all organisms during the whole period of their existence.
