Description

Black and white reproduction of an autograph letter from John Hawkins to Sir Joseph Banks dated 8th February 1794. The exhibition catalogue describes the content "relating to the circumstances in which his engraved plates (dated 1739) were made from Specimens of Cinchona sent by La Condamine to Doctor C. Mortimer, Secretary of the Royal Society". The letter was reproduced as part of the facsimiles lent by The Linnean Society of London and exhibited in Malaria section of the international celebration and exhibition : three hundredth anniversary of the first recognized use of cinchona by Europeans, 1630-1930 hosted by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1930. The letter is listed as exhibit no. 984 in the souvenir catalogue (possible Linnean reference 25.f.1), and is not held by Wellcome Collection.
