Description

Watercolour drawing by Pierre Gatier of a Magdalenian mural engraving in La Grotte des Trois Freres (cave of the Three Brothers), showing a masked human figure with an antler head piece, clad in skin of deer. The figure, partly incised and partly painted in black, is situated in the inmost recess of the cave and dominates hundreds of engravings of animals in the cave. It is held to represent a magician. The watercolour was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1931 and accessioned in 1945 (accession numbers CC 5304 and P27/1945)
