    With the population as estimated by the Registrar General these figures give a birth rate of 19.5 per 1,000 of the popu- lation per annum. The birth rate for England and Wales was 17.7 per 1,000 of the population per annum. Deaths.—During the 'year 1,014 deaths occurred in the Borough; of these 72 were of non-residents, and have been transferred to other districts; on the other hand the deaths of 64 Darlington residents occurred outside the Borough. These numbers give a death rate of 16.7 per 1,000 of the population per annum, if the population be taken to be 60,265 as estimated by the Registrar General. Here, and throughout this report, all deaths of members of the Army and Navy are treated as transferable, in accordance with the instructions of the Registrar General. One hundred and seventy-eight deaths occurred in Insti- tutions in the Borough—63 in the Workhouse, 65 in Greenbank Hospital, 21 in the Borough Isolation Hospital, 19 in Military Hospitals, and 10 in Nursing Homes; in addition to these 28 residents of Darlington died in Asylums, and 22 in other Institutions outside the Borough. Still Births.—The bodies of 61 stillborn children from the Borough were buried in the Town Cemeteries during the year. The numbers for the various quarters of the year were 11, 16, 21, and 13 respectively. Particulars of the causes of death, and the ages at which death took place, will be found in Tables I. and II., pages 20, 21 and 22.
