But as it is not in the power of any individual to fay how long he hath to live, prudent men, unable otherwife to provide fufficiently for their families or relations, have been ever ready to embrace an opportunity of deriving from the long life of others a remedy againft thofe incon¬ veniences, which might be confequent upon the Ihortnefs of their own ; and have from time to time united themfelves into focieties for this pur- pofe; and by letting apart a fmall portion of their prefent income, have been enabled, in fome meafure, to continue (after their deceafe) to their families the benefits which refulted from their feveral profeffions, places, or employments, whilft they lived. The advantages arifmg from affurances upon lives may be confidered, firft, as they concern the perfons themfelves who are allured; fecond- ly, as they concern their families (or others) after their deceafe; thirdly, as they concern the perfons who make affurances upon the lives of others.
