About this work
Description
This programme aims to cover the history of plastic surgery, highlighting some of the pioneers behind the development of some of the surgical procedures still used today. Giorgio Fischer talks of his 1974 discovery of the technique of liposuction, now the world's most popular cosmetic surgery. We see the process being performed on a patient. We hear about the work of Harold Gillies after World War 1 and see archival footage of young soldiers who were disfigured in the trenches. We also see a dramatic reconstruction of quack surgeon Howard Crum who performed 'plastic surgery' operations in front of an audience. We see a facelift operation in some detail. We also see an operation to enlarge Zara Bucci's breasts.
