About this work

Description

Photograph of Aurelia aurita, otherwise known as the common or moon jellyfish. These jellyfish are found all over the world and are common along the coast of Britain. They move by contracting their bell shaped head, which is translucent apart from the four prominent horseshoe-shaped gonads visible in the middle. The bell is lined with small threadlike tentacles, which can sting and trap small swimming animals. This image was taken at La Cite de la Mere in Cherbourg, France. Within this aquarium hundreds of jellyfish pulse and move in vertical tubes.
