About this work
Description
Flixborough, a small village in Lincolnshire, was the site of the biggest onshore industrial disaster in Britain. On Sat. 1st Jun 1974 the Nipro chemical plant exploded, killing 28 men and damaging every house in the surrounding villages. It was found that a temporary by-pass pipe connecting two tanks had twisted under pressure releasing a vapour cloud which exploded. It took 2 days to stop the fire. The company gave good compensation and the government held an enquiry. Many villagers are interviewed in the programme.
