Sir Morell Mackenzie was a physician who studied medicine at the London Hospital, and in Paris, Vienna and Budapest. He specialised in throat diseases and helped to found the Hospital for Diseases of the Throat in Golden Square in 1863. He courted controversy when he was summoned to advise the Crown Prince Frederick III of Germany on his throat condition, opposing the German doctors' opinions that it was cancerous, to later find that it was indeed malignant.
