About this work

Description

He holds a surgical knife, and is accompanied by eight cupids, possibly referring to the effects of inherited gonorrhea and syphilis studied by Ricord. The cupids on the left have an anxious expression, or are cast into darkness, or are rubbing their eyes (ophthalmia neonatorum, blenorrhagic ophthalmia). One on the right carries a crutch, while two others, free from disease, fly freely away
