About this work
Description
Right, the apotheosis of the king: wearing a crown of laurel he is raised up to Mount Olympus by Saturn and Jupiter. Above them are the signs of the zodiac, Hercules, Mercury, and Venus. Below them two women personifying victory and fame mourn him with his discarded armour and a snake (representing Discord? or his assassin?). On the left, in front of a triumphal arch, Marie de' Medici dressed as a widow is seated on a throne between Salomonic columns, with Minerva to the left of her and Prudence to the right. A woman personifying France offers her a globe marked with the fleur-de-lys, and another woman personifying regency offers her a rudder. Five noblemen and representatives of other estates of the realm kneel before her and urge her to accept the regency
