About this work

Description

An episode in the play Le Juif errant by Merville (pseudonym of Pierre-François Camus (1785-1853)) and Julien de Mallian (1805-1851), first produced in 1834. An angel blows a trumpet upon the head of Ahasuerus. Trumpeting angels appear in the light breaking through in the top-right. In the foreground dismembered skeletons lie with humans who are being stretched by demons. Eight geese stand in the shadows looking at the man. In the distance figures with no discernible features wearing hooded cloaks stand among men in uniforms. Behind them walk a giraffe and an elephant
