About this work

Description

An interview with Dr Alice Stewart by Claudia Hammond; she was aged 94 when this programme was captured. She was interviewed at her Oxford cottage. She remembers chosing medicine with the support of her parents; her mother was also a doctor. She talks about her life as an epidemiologist from the discovery of the relationship between x-raying pregnant mothers and childhood leukaemia. Her collection of data was novel at the time; she chose to interview the mothers. Some time after, Dr Stewart became involved in the affects of living close-by a nuclear facility at Hanford, US. She became involved in the anti-nuclear lobby by accident.
