About this work
Description
The second in a four-part series which looks at the lives of people with unusual neurological conditions. This part features Cath who developed foreign accent syndrome after suffering from cerebral vasculitis which starved the language areas of her brain of oxygen. She meets a fellow sufferer, George, and they look at a scan of George's brain which shows that the brain stem is damaged. For 17 years Karen has alien hand syndrome which has given her an uncontrollable left arm and hand following surgery to separate the left and right hemispheres of her brain to treat epilepsy. David's alien limb syndrome is so severe that he wants to have his right leg amputated; a condition known as body integrity identity disorder. He meets a man, Robert, who destroyed his leg in dry ice, forcing surgeons to operate. He sees it as the best day of his life. Professor Ramachandran and his assistant Paul McGeoch run tests on David to assess whether his condition is neurological or psychological. They deduce that there is a strong neurological component to his problem and attempt some treatments including the mirror treatment used in phantom limb syndrome.
